How the subscription works, and what stays your responsibility.
Aid to navigation
Sail With Dan is an aid to navigation, not a primary means of navigation. It does not replace official charts, an echo sounder, a lookout, or your judgment. It is not ENC or ECDIS data and it does not meet SOLAS chart carriage requirements. Only official government charts and Notices to Mariners contain all the information needed for safe navigation.
Skipper responsibility
You remain responsible for the vessel, the crew, the lookout, and the passage. Routes and forecasts produced by the app are planning aids. You vet every board before you sail it.
Data sources
Chart, seamark, weather, and depth data come from third parties, including MapTiler, OpenStreetMap, OpenSeaMap, Open-Meteo, and EMODnet. None of it is surveyed for navigation. Coverage, currency, and accuracy are outside our control and can change without notice.
Routing and depth
A route that “stays in water” has been checked against drawn coastline only. It says nothing about depth, shoals, rocks, restricted areas, or traffic. Depth contours are modeled from roughly 115 m cells, are coarsest inshore, are not soundings, and are never used to plan a route. Wave height on the forecast and departure sheets is display only; it does not move the recommended leave time.
Position and alarms
Position, speed, course, man overboard, and the anchor alarm depend on the phone GPS and on the operating system letting the app run. Accuracy degrades at low speed and in poor reception. Battery, permissions, power saving, and background limits can stop an alarm. MOB is a mark and a course back with a looping notification; the chart stays up. It is not a search. Forecast heads-ups are not alarms. The 3 / 6 / 12 NM coastal-limit bar is visual only — not an alarm and not a legal territorial-sea plot. Do not treat an anchor watch as the only thing standing between the boat and the beach.
Plans and pricing
The app is sold as an auto-renewing subscription: $1.99 a week, $4.99 a month, or $39.99 a year, in US dollars and before store tax. The yearly plan opens with a seven-day free trial of the full app; the weekly and monthly plans have no trial. Every plan renews until you cancel it, and cancelling takes effect at the end of the paid period. Purchases, renewals, and cancellations are handled by the App Store under its terms. No purchase can be completed on this site.
No warranty
The app is provided as is, without warranty of fitness for navigation or for any particular passage. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for loss or damage arising from use of the app or from reliance on the data it displays.
